Surround.Scan™ 3D Scanning

Included with all PolyScan systems

A Smarter Way to Scan — No Moving Parts. No Compromise.

Traditional CMMs and laser scanners often require moving parts, targets, or manual setup to capture complete geometry. Polyrix Surround.Scan™ technology offers a revolutionary alternative: a fully integrated, no-contact 3D scanning system with zero moving parts—delivering full-surface coverage in a single scan cycle.

How Surround.Scan™ Works

At the heart of every PolyScan is structured light technology: a non-contact method that projects precise light patterns onto the object. These patterns deform based on the surface geometry and are captured by cameras. Polyrix's proprietary algorithms instantly convert this data into a high-resolution 3D model.

What sets Surround.Scan™ apart is the unique multi-sensor design. Multiple projectors and cameras surround the object, capturing all angles at once. With no moving components, scanning is faster, safer, and more reliable. Since the system is factory-calibrated and works as one cohesive unit, there's no need for markers, targets, or surface prep.

Surround.Scan™ FAQ

Surround.Scan™ is Polyrix’s patented no-motion 3D scanning technology that uses multiple cameras and projectors in an array configuration. Unlike robotic arms or handheld scanners that capture data sequentially, Surround.Scan™ captures the entire part simultaneously in a single scan cycle. This enables faster, safer, and more reliable metrology—particularly useful for  inline inspection.

With no moving parts or robotic arms, Surround.Scan™ eliminates collision risks and ensures consistent, high-speed data capture. This makes it safer for operators and ideal for automated quality assurance in high-throughput inspection lines. We often say, “what does not move, cannot break.” With this principle, the Surround.Scan™ feature of PolyScan systems is easy to maintain year after year, delivering consistent results for every scan.

Surround.Scan™ projects structured light patterns onto a part, recorded by synchronized cameras to calculate precise 3D coordinates. By projecting from all directions at once, the system captures comprehensive surface data instantly—making it ideal for complex geometries in automated quality inspection. Polyrix holds a patent on the multi-projector configuration, enabling faster scanning for all PolyScan systems compared to other projection solutions.

The multi-sensor setup eliminates blind spots, ensuring complete coverage of complex parts without requiring repositioning or multiple scans. By projecting structured light from multiple angles simultaneously, Surround.Scan™ measures all visible surfaces in one scan cycle. Additionally, limitless multi-baseline combinations of camera and projector configurations provide a combinatorial wealth of data that Polyrix can leverage for reliable inspection.

No. Surround.Scan™ is fully markerless and requires no sprays, targets, or dots. This reduces setup time, lowers operational costs, and avoids contamination—making it practical for inline metrology directly on the shop floor. Additionally, multiple scanning units can be calibrated as a single scanner, operating in one coordinate reference frame, ensuring PolyScan data is already integrated.
Each Surround.Scan™ system is precisely calibrated for long-term reliability. Its design incorporates vibration isolation and temperature monitoring. Recalibration can be performed proactively or as needed to ensure consistent, traceable measurement accuracy. When required, PolyScans can also calibrate inline with Calibration.Plus.
Surround.Scan™ is widely used in automotive, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing where speed, safety, and accuracy are critical. It is particularly effective for inline inspection, automated quality assurance, and high-volume production environments.

Non-contact scanning prevents part wear, enables inspection of fragile or sensitive surfaces, and avoids damage associated with physical contact. With no moving components, the system also minimizes mechanical failures common in traditional scanners. Another benefit of non-contact scanning is speed, allowing PolyScan systems to capture data extremely quickly.

Yes. Surround.Scan™ powers every PolyScan system, ensuring all customers benefit from the same foundation of safety, speed, and accuracy in metrology.

Surround.Scan™ can meet cycle time, prevent bottlenecks, eliminate costly rework, and minimize operator intervention. By enabling faster and more reliable inspection, it improves first-pass yield and accelerates return on investment in automated quality assurance systems.

No. PolyScans and their core Surround.Scan™ technology are scalable to an arbitrary number of scanning units—enabling inspections from tiny components to large finished products such as automotive bodies-in-white or airplane components. Accuracy levels depend on the measurement volume, all of which can be demonstrated in our Simulation.Lab during a demo.
